How to Buy Cryptocurrency on Robinhood Using a Debit Card

This guide walks through purchasing cryptocurrency on Robinhood using a debit card, from account setup to confirming your transaction.

Requirements Before You Start

Before purchasing crypto, make sure you have:

  • A verified Robinhood account
  • Identity verification completed (KYC)
  • A supported debit card (Visa or Mastercard)
  • A debit card issued by a U.S. bank
  • Two-factor authentication enabled (recommended)

⚠️ Credit cards are not supported for crypto purchases on Robinhood.

Step 1: Log In to Your Robinhood Account

  1. Open the Robinhood app or go to https://robinhood.com/
  2. Log in using your email/username and password
  3. Complete any required security prompts (2FA, device verification)

Step 2: Enable Crypto Trading (If Not Already Enabled)

If this is your first time using crypto on Robinhood:

  1. Navigate to Menu → Crypto
  2. Follow the prompts to enable crypto trading
  3. Agree to the crypto disclosures and terms
  4. Wait for confirmation (usually instant)

Step 3: Add Your Debit Card

  1. Open Menu → Transfers → Linked Accounts

  2. Select Add Debit Card

  3. Enter:

    • Card number
    • Expiration date
    • CVV
    • Billing ZIP code
  4. Confirm the card

If your bank supports it, verification is instant. Otherwise, Robinhood may request additional confirmation. You may need to add a bank account before you can add your debit card.

Step 4: Choose the Cryptocurrency

  1. Tap the Search icon

  2. Search for the cryptocurrency you want to buy. If this is intended for a purchase elsewhere, verify the crypto coin that is accepted. Most places are looking for one of the following:

    • USDC sent on the Ethereum (ETH or ERC20) or Solana (SOL) networks.
      • USDT sent on the Ethereum (ETH or ERC20) or Solana (SOL) networks.
  3. Select the asset to open its detail page

Step 5: Start the Purchase

  1. Tap Buy

  2. Enter the dollar amount you want to purchase

  3. Choose Debit Card as the payment method

  4. Review:

    • Purchase amount
    • Estimated crypto received
    • Fees (if applicable)

Robinhood displays the final price before confirmation.

Step 6: Confirm the Transaction

  1. Tap Review Order
  2. Confirm the purchase
  3. Complete any security verification (PIN or biometric)

Once confirmed, the crypto is typically credited instantly.

Fees and Limits

  • Fees: Robinhood does not charge a separate crypto trading fee, but a spread is included in the price

  • Debit Card Limits:

    • Daily and weekly limits apply
    • Limits vary by account and bank
  • Availability: Some banks block crypto transactions

After the Purchase

  • Your crypto will appear in your Robinhood crypto portfolio

  • You can:

    • Hold it
    • Sell it
    • Transfer it to an external wallet (if withdrawals are enabled on your account)

Common Issues & Fixes

Debit Card Declined

  • Bank blocking crypto → contact your bank
  • Incorrect ZIP code → update billing info
  • Daily limit reached → wait 24 hours

Crypto Not Showing

  • Refresh the app
  • Check transaction history
  • Log out and log back in

Security Tips

  • Enable two-factor authentication
  • Avoid storing large balances long-term on exchanges
